Scottish Sports Futures' basketball-led programme for disadvantaged kids up for grabsThe charity Scottish Sports Futures works with disadvantaged children both in schools and in the evenings in Scotland.
It works closely with the Scottish Government (through Cashback), the NHS, The Robertson Trust and many others.
The coming months will see its exposure increase dramatically and hopefully this will aid the charity in getting commercial backing so that it can increase its programmes in Scotland.
"We have two core programmes which we run, Jump2it and Shell Twilight Basketball. Jump2it is a Scotland-wide initiative by the Scottish Sports Futures charity and basketball team, the Scottish Rocks, whose players go into schools and talk to the children about smoking, nutrition and physical fitness while providing an introduction to basketball.
Deprivation
"Participating schools also take part in a basketball tournament, with the final played on the Rocks' court at the Kelvin Hall in Glasgow. These programmes run for six weeks and we currently work with 130 schools with the aim over the next year to increase to 175.
"Our Twilight programme works with disadvantaged children with areas of social deprivation. Children from the age of 11 to 21 work with our team of youth workers and sports coaches on Friday evenings - the sessions are free to all who participate.
The aims of both programmes are to
encourage 11 to 21 year olds to avoid alcohol, drugs and crime
increase self esteem, team work and social skills
increase knowledge and awareness of how diet and fitness can change lives
promote refugee and asylum seeker integration.
We are looking to work with commercial sponsors across both these programmes. There are a range of opportunities available - please email me for more information".
