With a fair wind and sponsors' support, Team Hlanganani can set sail for the 2008 World Championships
Team Hlangananani (meaning "coming together" in Zulu) is a South African development catamaran sailing team, which focusses predominantly on developing the sport of catamaran sailing amongst previously disadvantaged communities in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. The team is current seeking funding in order to enter the first ever development team into the 2008 Hobie Tiger World Championships, to be held in South Africa for the first time. The team's wish is to acquire two new Hobie Tiger catamarans at a cost of approximately £25,000 for ongoing training purposes, as well as to enter various local, national and international events, including the 2008 World Championships and beyond. In order to realise this lifelong dream, they desperately require a long term, dedicted partner, who shares the same vision. Team Hlanganani have teamed up with the well known Izivunguvungu MSC for Youth Foundation, who have been instrumental in raising the level of sailing, specifically amongst lesser privileged individuals, in South Africa. Several of the current crew members aboard Team Shosholoza - South Africa's first ever entry into the America's Cup - hail from the Izivungu Foundation. This has resulted in unprecedented levels of public interest in the sport of sailing and it is the intention of Team Hlanganani to continue nurturing South Africa's talent and building on this pride and tradition. Substantial endorsement and branding opportunities are also available through this long-term partnership, both on and off the water. These include guaranteed television and news coverage to a local and global audience, as well as in all pre-race and post-race multi-media publicity (eg radio, print and dedicated website). The long term objective of the team is to take part in several major international regattas.
