| MT/0031 | MATV - CHANNEL 6 MATV were granted a Restricted Service Licence (RSL) to broadcast terrestrially to the Asian population of Leicester in 1998. MATV has been broadcasting since 1999 with a mixture of local and Asian originated programming. On April 1st 2000 MATV became available for cable subscribers in Leicestershire, through NTL and also became the first RSL station to undergo a market research programme. The study, carried out in February and March 2001 showed some encouraging results, say the organisation: MATV has been embraced by the Asian population of Leicester with an awareness rating of over 90% in its catchment area. MATV can now boast that it is the only Asian station available in the UK which has any market research data available. The station runs a 7 day schedule, broadcasting for 24 hours a day, with five strands of material. The first is its own locally-originated production (local news, Asian language production, live talk, etc). The second strand is acquired Asian language feature films. The third strand is other acquired Asian language programming. The fourth is acquired English language shows (eg Toyota World of Wildlife). The station's fifth strand is Sky News, which comes free of charge and runs three times a day weekdays and twice at weekends.
