THIS STUDENT VOLUNTEER GROUP COULD BE A GREAT DISCOVERY FOR SPONSORS
Discovery (formerly Swansea Student Community Action) is a student-led organisation that regularly recruits over 300 students to be involved as volunteers in around thirty community-based projects. The projects each have different aims, but overall Discovery seeks to improve the relationships between students and the local community around them, by offering services to both adults and children. This involves breaking down the preconceptions that each group may have of the other, and tackling social isolation and the relief of poverty - whilst promoting voluntary activity and developing key skills for the volunteers.

As an example, Circus Eruption is the UK's first integrated youth circus. It has around 50 members aged 11-19, a third of whom are 'labelled' with special needs or disability - but who are completely integrated into the group. Circus Eruption meets weekly, providing a space where young people of all abilities can learn circus skills and performing arts in a safe and fully participative environment.

Another example, Create, is a drama project working with 8-13 year olds in the Townhill area of Swansea. The group uses drama-related activities (including music, dance and craft, etc.) to encourage teamwork and social interaction. They play lots of games and the drama element is very basic - no Shakespearian skills needed, just enthusiasm and a love of biscuits and drinks, they tell us!

Community Art runs weekly arts and crafts sessions for 8-13 year olds in Townhill. Children learn new arts skills and get a chance to make a mess and have a great time. They usually work on small art/craft projects that the children can take home every week, but previously they also worked on a large mosaic, which is now on display at the Phoenix Centre.

Discovery is the organising force behnd many other groups and events for both able-bodied and disabled people, children and adults alike.

Sponsorship support would be very much appreciated.
