Huthwaite International sponsors awards programme at Sheffield Hallam University

Huthwaite International is providing sponsorship funds as part of an awards programme, and a guest lecturer, to Sheffield Hallam University. The leading sales skills consultancy is to work on the university's Marketing and Sales Skills module in its International Marketing MBA programme "in a major drive to improve the UK's selling abilities".

The new course follows a successful pilot of a Marketing and Sales Skills module during the academic year 2005-2006, which saw more than one fifth of students achieve a first class grade. Typically fewer than three per cent of students achieve the top grade for any module. Huthwaite made awards for the best student and best student team at the University's Business and Management school in a ceremony on 20th November. The consultancy's managing director, Tony Hughes, presented trophies and cash prizes.

Huthwaite also sets a business challenge based on one of its current real-life experiences for students to solve as part of their studies. Meanwhile, its delivery services manager, Barry Hazelwood, delivers one of the module's twelve lectures focusing on the company's world-renowned SPIN® selling technique. "The Business Management School's employability agenda makes it a priority to deliver the skills that our students will need to help them achieve success when they graduate," says Sheffield Hallam University lecturer, Simon Kelly. "The involvement of 'real world' companies such as Huthwaite with genuine challenges is essential for this. In addition, the high marks achieved by the students indicate that this is an engaging and successful teaching method."

"Sales is gaining credibility as an academic interest and institutions like Sheffield Hallam are pioneers in the recognition of their importance," says Hazelwood. "Huthwaite's research found that just 1 per cent of UK business courses offer a sales module. Only those providing sales skills properly prepare their student for the skills they will need in a variety of careers, and not just sales."
