Alliance & Leicester sponsor Leicester's Diwali 2006 celebrations

Alliance & Leicester will sponsor Leicester’s Diwali 2006 celebrations. This is the fourth consecutive year that the locally based company is sponsoring this major festival in the city.

Cllr. John Mugglestone, Leicester City Council’s Cabinet lead for regeneration and culture said: “Leicester’s Diwali celebrations are famous. They are one of the highlights of the autumn in the city. I am delighted that Alliance & Leicester is sponsoring our celebrations again. It has been a fantastic partnership”.

This year the Diwali lights along the city's Belgrave Road will be switched on at a special ceremony, on Sunday, 8th October. There will be more celebrations and a firework display on Cossington Street Recreation Ground on Diwali Day, Saturday, 21st October.

Sir Derek Higgs, Chairman of Alliance and Leicester said: “Alliance & Leicester is delighted to be involved in the sponsorship of Leicester’s Diwali celebrations for the fourth year running. Leicestershire has a thriving, diverse community and we are committed to playing our part in supporting the community through staff volunteering, sponsorship and charitable donations. I would like to wish everyone a happy and peaceful Diwali and hope everyone enjoys the celebrations”.

The celebrations are organised by Leicester City Council and Leicester Hindu Festival Council, with Alliance & Leicester providing financial support. The Leicester Diwali Guide 2006 is available in shops, sports clubs, and city council venues throughout the city.

Diwali is one of ten feature events taking place in Leicester in September and October. From the China Talks season of exhibitions and events and the European Circus, to Abbey Park Stride 10km walk and Black History Season, Leicester in the autumn has something for everyone. 'Diwali' is a short form of the word Deepawali, meaning ‘cluster of lamps’. The festival is observed by Hindus, Jains and Sikhs. There are many interpretations of the festival stories and characters associated with Diwali. The two main characters are Laksmi, goddess of wealth, and Lord Rama, crowned following his return from exile.
