Collecting the data
This page provides site traffic information for
www.uksponsorship.com
The 'raw' daily log files produced by our web server are analysed using Analog, the most popular log analyser on the net. Analysing the logs makes it possible to see how many visits have been made to our site, by how many people, etc.
M ore precisely, the reports provide information such as that listed below (an example taken from an actual analysis of one day's visits to www.uksponsorship.com):
Some definitions
Requests (often called 'hits')
The first term one needs to understand is “Requests”, also referred to as “Hits”. The number of requests (36,060 in the example above) is the total number of files downloaded, including images and other types of files. In order to understand how this affects web statistics, consider a web page containing six images, an html document and a JavaScript menu. A visitor to this site will generate eight requests or hits each time this page is viewed. Therefore requestor hits do not accurately reflect individual visitors to a site.
Successful requests for pages ('gross impressions')
The second term one needs to understand is the number of “Requests for Pages” or “Page Views”. In the example above this figure is 3,442. This figure is simply the number of requests made for various page(s) on the site, regardless of who made them. Again, this does not accurately reflect individual users to a site - but it is a useful measure of 'gross traffic' or 'gross impressions'.

Distinct hosts served ('unique users')
The third important term is “Distinct Hosts Served”. This figure represents the number of different computers (IP addresses — the address a computer uses to identify itself on a network) that have requested pages on the site in question. In our example (see left) this figure is 1,566. These are counted only once regardless of how many times a client visits your site. However, some ISPs such as America Online employ the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), which uses a different IP address for every page requested. Therefore, each IP address reported by Analog is not necessarily an indication of a unique visitor.
