| AMB/PL003 | ![]() HAMMERED STEEL Hammered Steel is a steel band situated in the west of Cornwall, founded in 1993 as a community project. One of the original aims of the band was to promote multi-cultural ideals within its remote and rural community. From the beginning Hammered Steel was very popular with audiences, playing mainly Caribbean influenced music with calypso, soca and reggae rhythms - and soon gained a reputation for high quality performances, this being rewarded with winning joint first place in the Best Band on the Road competition at the Notting Hill Carnival in 2004, beating many of the top steel bands in the country. The original band bought a set of battered old pans, but these have now been replaced by better quality pans - the band is always looking to improve and increase the number of pans, but finances restrict their ambitions. The band was invited to represent Cornwall at the Royal Show in Stoneleigh in 1998 and have since played in many prestigious events, including the Royal Cornwall Show, Trevithick Day, Mazey Day (on more than one occasion) and Glastonbury Music Festival in 2007. Hammered Steel is a registered charity (1060530), enabling it to pursue its aims of broadening cultural horizons and extending opportunities to those in the community who might not be able to afford such expensive instruments to learn to perform at a high standard. They were successful in gaining support from the Foundation of Sport and Arts in 1997 to provide a van to transport all of the equipment to the various gigs that they play; but this van is now in desperate need of renewal. Hammered Steel is always aiming for ever higher standards and is now looking to extend performances throughout the country - but again its finances restrict its needs and ambitions. Hammered Steel presently raises funding by the sale of their CD recordings, playing at various gigs including weddings, fetes and other events and collections from members of the public, but are always looking for sponsorship in any way, shape or form, and so any help from anyone would be very much appreciated by all those associated with what they believe is a very special steel band. | AMB/001 | THE BAND OF THE YORKSHIRE VOLUNTEERS Until the Strategic Defence Review,The Band of The Yorkshire Volunteers were part of the Territorial Army. From April 1999 they have existed as a civilian organisation using band instruments "on loan" from the Territorial Army. This arrangement worked with little interference from the Territorial Army until recently. But it seems that the climate has now changed and there is a real threat that the Territorial Army will demand that their "asset" be returned. The band are to remove the threat and assure their long term future and by purchasing the equipment and gain complete independence from the Territorial Army - they seek sponsorship to enable them to accomplish this. | AMB/003 | CITY OF CAMBRIDGE BRASS BAND The City of Cambridge Brass Band announces a new opportunity enabling sponsors to increase public awareness of their charity work, potentially leading to increased sales and profits. The band is currently self-financed and is now offering its reputation, expertise and services to provide a sponsorship opportunity with exceptional benefits. Formed in 1900 and making its first BBC radio broadcast in 1938, the City of Cambridge Brass Band has served the community from which it stems with loyalty and steadfastness. Along the way, it has operated under alternative titles, but has always been aware of the need to enhance the repertoire of original brass music and educate the public with its performances. During this long history, the band has increased its profile and reputation by helping raise many thousands of pounds for charities including Radio Cambridgeshire’s Trustline Appeal, MAGPAS and the Rotary Club. Prestigious concerts have involved many famous names and specially-commissioned works performed in some outstanding locations. These have included several BBC broadcasts including a recording from Ely Cathedral. A long history of competition successes has included both local and national events, including qualifying for the National Finals in London as recently as 2000. The band gained charitable status in 2000 and is presently self-financing, income generated from concerts, donations, subscription fees and sponsorship. This is used to carry out the objectives of the band, these being “to advance the education of the general public in the art and science of British Brass Band music through the provision of public band concerts and recitals and training in brass music skills”. | AMB/006 | MIDLANDS YOUTH JAZZ ORCHESTRA The Midland Youth Jazz Orchestra is now widely acclaimed as one of the UK’s top big bands. Its reputation has been founded on a consistently high quality of performance over two decades. In addition, audiences find they are infected by the enjoyment which band members bring to performances, and the excitement which the band generates. These qualities have helped bring the band success in the BBC National Big Band Competition, initially during the 'eighties winning the Youth Section, but latterly being successful in the senior competition. In fact the band has been unbeaten in the BBC competition since the mid-'eighties, although, because of it success, it is now barred for two years from entering, following a win! | AMB/008 | PENNINE BRASS Pennine Brass is seeking new sponsorship to help with running costs and instruments for the band. A number of leading UK companies already help brass bands via sponsorship. But this particular opportunity is to sponsor one of the UK's elite bands (currently un-sponsored) which has no hang-ups or history which might otherwise complicate any name change to include the sponsor's name. Exposure would be primarily in the north of England, sometimes to audiences in excess of 1,000, with thirty+ performances in support of charity fund-raising. The band is also available for corporate functions. Companies that already benefit from this opportunity include Yorkshire Building Society, British Telecom and NTL. Pennine Brass would welcome enquiries both from individuals and from businesses who are interested in what the band can offer in return. Contact: Bruce Jones, Public Relations.
